Several new lifeguards join the team following successful training

In July, 11 aspiring lifeguards completed their Pool Lifeguard Course across our Newark and Ollerton sites. Following the course, 7 participants have successfully joined our team and are now helping keep our facilities safe for our pool users.
I attended the Lifeguard Course with Active4Today in July. I found the course really informative and prepared me to pass the exam with a blend of practical and theory. Since starting in the role of a lifeguard I've felt really welcomed by the other Lifeguards and supported to compound my training. Thankfully I've not yet had to rescue anyone, and I'm getting the hand of blowing the whistle 🙂

Learners stated the key skills and knowledge they will implement are:
- Lifeguard expectations
- Pool training
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
- First aid
- Duty of care
- Understanding different people’s needs
- Health and safety
- Recognising potential hazards and casualties
The Lifeguard Course was very informative, and I learned a lot: from how to give first aid to a casualty to what makes a good lifeguard. I also made friends with a lot of people from the course which made it more enjoyable. It was also good to use practice scenarios in the pool which can be transferred into a real-life scenario.
I am also finding my new role very enjoyable and different to my previous role as a Fitness Instructor. I feel the best part of lifeguarding is how easily I can interact with the members and answer any questions they have, and to make them feel welcome at Active4Today.

Throughout the programme, participants demonstrated commitment, teamwork, and professionalism as they worked towards their Level 3 Qualification.
The recent Lifeguard Course was a fantastic success, bringing together learners from a range of backgrounds, with the majority attending from outside our organisation. We were also pleased to fund the progression of several existing staff members, supporting their development and career opportunities.
The commitment and enthusiasm shown throughout the course was outstanding, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to gain valuable life-saving skills and start a rewarding career in the leisure industry.
